Tuesday Sep. 10 - BBQ with Friends

Today we just hung out and had a very nice day.  It started with coffee of course and then a trip to the market (Tuesday is market day in St. Saturnin).  Our main mission was to buy things for our BBQ later today with our friends from Belgium (Denis, Kathleen and Fran and Fran's friend Jana) that we met two years ago.  The seafood merchant was up from Marseille so we bought some beautiful salmon filets from him and the ladies bought fresh items for the salad and vege plate.  And of course we had to stop and buy bread for breakfast and for dinner.

We spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon getting things ready and also got some time in by the pool.  Our guests arrived around 4pm.  We started with some appetizers (cheese, bread, olives and some yummy anchovy paste that no one partaked of except me).  Denis brought three types of Belgium beer that the men sampled (and the ladies had rose).  Denis indicated that two of them had been awarded the honor of best beer in the world (not sure how they figure that out).

When it came time to fire up the BBQ I was glad I had an expert in the group (Denis).  The charcoal over here is totally different than in the states and they do not use lighter fluid.  You get a few pieces going with a little starter block and keep adding to it like a Boy Scout fire.

Dinner was comprised of salmon, fingerling potatoes and a special eggplant dish that Kathleen prepared (slices of eggplant pan-fried in olive oil and then marinated in balsamic vinegar), grilled zuccini, salad and bread.  And of course rose to wash it all down.

Denis was in charge of dessert.  It was fresh strawberries to which he added some white wine, Cointreau (triple sec), fresh mint and topped with marshmallows.  This all went into small foil containers that he put on the grill and heated up until the marshmallows melted.  It was very good!

We had a wonderful time and will be joining them again for dinner on Thursday.
